Wolverton Bandstand

Client: Milton Keynes Council

This artwork references the traditional bandstand and its function as a community-cohesive structure. Surrounded by Victorian and new build contemporary housing, the form’s purpose and geometry explores ideas of Victorian philanthropy and references cast iron lattice work on palm houses and other civic structures in the town.
The sun disk element can be seen from all aspects of the park, acting as a hub or rendezvous from which lines can be drawn out to local key sites, the centre of a compass that radiates out to the surrounding areas. Perform and be entertained, a place for talent to be discovered, a shelter from the rain, an outdoor classroom, an interactive space, and a spotlight. Perforated grommets set into the tubes create a whispering gallery, enabling people to talk into one side of a tube and be heard from the opposite side.
In addition to the bandstand, fourteen deckchairs, stored in a locked cabinet next to the site, spell out WOLVERTON ON SEA in individual letters.
