Elizabeth represents the ethos of the new build Wolverton Science and Engineering Academy. The screens that wrap around the corner are powered by the solar panels that clad the structure. A rolling programme of films and graphics content are curated by a designated group of pupils and staff.
The films and animations are sent wirelessly to the screen and movies shot on mobile phones can be sent directly to the screens. The solar inverter is connected to the grid making the work potentially stand alone as regards its energy usage.
The sculpture references the Bilston blast furnace (named Elizabeth after the owner’s daughter) decommissioned in the 1980s.
Where local coal once produced steel, solar energy now enables information.
