‘Can you see us’ celebrates Stairfoots iconic Codd Bottle factory, coal mining industry, and brickworks, which are no longer in operation. The surface design uses prismatic reflective vinyl in a tessellated brick pattern. The piece lights up only for the person whose headlights or phone torch are pointed directly at it.
The work incorporates key industrial notes from the past using the profile of the Codd Bottle’s negative form as the overriding shape. The main production factory was in Stairfoot, its unique method of trapping carbonated drinks with a glass marble made it a global product in the early twentieth century. The central focal point of the work holds a 3D printed piece of coal, set between three concentric stainless steel flat washer forms which rotate on bespoke precision bearings in the wind.
